The mailboxes in Mail's side bar were organized without all of the numeric-labeled daughter folders mentioned above instead, each message displayed as a single file with its filename the same as the subject of the message. Instead of spending my time following his advice, I trashed the problematic imported mailboxes, exported each one on the old MacBook Pro, copied the exported folders to the new MacBook Pro, then imported them with the "mbox" radio button checked instead of the "Apple Mail" radio button. He said this because I mistakenly informed him that my new MacBook Pro had one third-party app (a cloning utility certified for Sierra), and he attributed the symptom to that app. I called Apple Care, got referred to a senior advisor, and his recommendation was to wipe the MacBook Pro's flash RAM drive, reinstall Sierra, and reimport all of my mailboxes without any third party software installed.
